Bonnie was a very good friend of mine. She called herself my "SG", or Surrogate Grandmother (and my son was to call her "SGG"!). We bonded over art during one of my workshops, and for years my son and I would go to her home for a game of Mexican Train or UNO each month.
I was sad to hear about her diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. She was a vibrant woman with so many wonderful stories about her life. Not all happy memories, but she took everything in stride and looked at the good side of everything.
Before she died, she asked me to paint a portrait of her for her daughter. I was honoured to have been asked, but very stressed. It was something I wanted to have done before she passed away, but the project was very difficult. I loved her. She was an important person to me and that can make the process of painting a portrait complicated. Especially when they are in pain, and you want to do a good job for them.
In the end, I turned my painting and my photo resource upside down. Took my own advice which I've given students for years. I think Bonnie would approve.
Bonnie passed away on December 25, 2015 at the age of 87. We miss her.
