Artist's Tip

Most of us buy a pre-primed canvas, and proceed to paint on it directly. This is fine, and won't be a problem most of the time - but adding texture to your canvas, or at the least re-priming your surface will make your painting look more complex and interesting. Try one of these suggestions:

  • Apply a thin, smooth layer of light molding paste with a large cake knife or palette knife; wait 24 hours for it to dry then prime it. Allow to dry completely before painting. (This is what I do to each canvas!)

  • Collage a piece of tissue paper, or decorative paper to the surface. Depending on how thin or thick the paper is, it may seal in with a bumpy texture (tissue paper) or a smooth surface (thick paper)

  • Use one of the fun acrylic mediums available! See what they can do on my blog post for ARTspot:

2014 is ramping up to be an exciting year! I have two books scheduled for release that will feature my work! Look for them at and Barnes & Noble:

  • AcrylicWorks: Best of Acrylic; North Light Books. Scheduled for release in February 2014.

  • Painting in Acrylics: The Indispensable Guide, by Lorena Kloosterboer; Quarto Books. Scheduled for release late 2014.
